Fisetin Topical Delivery Via Ascorbyl Palmitate/Hyaluronan-Enhanced Limosomes: A Novel Paradigm For Preventing UVB-Induced Skin Photoaging
Our skin is constantly exposed to environmental stressors, with ultraviolet B (UVB) radiation being a major culprit behind premature aging, characterized by wrinkles, loss of elasticity, and inflammation. Scientists are always looking for new ways to protect and repair skin from this damage.
A recent breakthrough involves a natural compound called Fisetin, which is found in many fruits and vegetables and is known for its powerful antioxidant properties. However, Fisetin doesn’t easily dissolve in water and struggles to penetrate the skin effectively, limiting its use in topical applications.
To overcome these challenges, researchers developed an innovative delivery system. They encapsulated Fisetin within tiny, specialized carriers called limosomes, which are like microscopic bubbles designed for efficient substance delivery. To further enhance their effectiveness, these limosomes were modified with two additional beneficial ingredients: ascorbyl palmitate (a form of vitamin C, also known for its antioxidant properties) and hyaluronan (a substance naturally found in the skin that helps retain moisture and improve elasticity).
This new Fisetin-delivery system demonstrated remarkable results. The tiny carriers were able to hold a very high amount of Fisetin and release it steadily over time. More importantly, they significantly improved Fisetin’s ability to penetrate deep into the skin layers.
In studies, this enhanced Fisetin formulation showed superior anti-aging, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects compared to Fisetin applied alone. It helped reduce harmful enzymes that break down skin components, lowered inflammatory markers, boosted natural protective enzymes in the skin, and preserved the skin’s structural integrity by reducing collagen degradation. This means it can effectively combat the cellular damage and visible signs of sun-induced skin aging.
This novel approach offers a promising way to harness the full potential of beneficial natural compounds for skin protection and rejuvenation.
