Caloric Restriction Rejuvenates Aged Adult Stem Cells: From Mechanisms To Interventions
As we age, the stem cells in our bodies, which are crucial for repairing and replacing damaged tissues, tend to lose their ability to function effectively. This decline contributes to many age-related problems. However, research suggests that a dietary approach known as caloric restriction—reducing overall calorie intake without causing malnutrition—can help these vital cells regain their youthful characteristics. This process involves several key mechanisms. One important aspect is preventing the buildup of “senescent” cells, which are cells that have stopped dividing and can release harmful substances, contributing to aging. Additionally, caloric restriction helps maintain “autophagy,” a natural cellular process where cells clean out damaged components and recycle them, essentially keeping the cells healthy and functional.
