Parental Factors, Prenatal Air Exposures, And Adolescent Trauma Are Associated With Telomere Length In Early Adulthood: Evidence From A UK Longitudinal Birth Cohort
Our bodies contain tiny structures called telomeres, which are like protective caps at the ends of our chromosomes. These caps safeguard our genetic information and naturally shorten as we get older, making their length a key indicator of our biological age and overall health. Recent findings highlight that a range of early life experiences can significantly influence the length of these telomeres by the time individuals reach early adulthood. This includes factors related to a person’s parents, such as their health and experiences, as well as environmental exposures even before birth. For instance, exposure to air pollution during pregnancy has been shown to impact telomere length. Additionally, experiencing traumatic events during adolescence can also play a role. Understanding these connections helps us see how early life circumstances, from the environment in the womb to experiences during teenage years, can have lasting effects on our cellular aging and, consequently, our long-term health.
