Cinnamon Polysaccharides Reshape Gut Microbiota And Enrich Alloprevotella Rava To Promote Acetate-Dependent Choline Metabolism And Delay Mammary Aging
Our bodies are complex systems, and the tiny organisms living in our gut, collectively known as the gut microbiota, play a surprisingly large role in our overall health, including how we age. Recent research has shed light on how a natural compound found in cinnamon, called cinnamon polysaccharides, can influence these gut inhabitants to promote healthier aging, particularly in mammary glands.
The study found that consuming cinnamon polysaccharides leads to a beneficial shift in the gut bacteria, specifically increasing the abundance of a bacterium called Alloprevotella rava. This particular bacterium appears to be a key player in a chain of events that positively impacts our cells.
When Alloprevotella rava becomes more prevalent, it helps the body better utilize choline, an essential nutrient crucial for many bodily functions, including cell membrane formation and nerve signaling. The research showed that Alloprevotella rava increases choline levels in the blood and mammary tissue. It does this by boosting the body’s own mechanisms for absorbing and using choline, while also reducing the activity of other microbes that break down choline in a less beneficial way.
Further investigation revealed that a substance produced by Alloprevotella rava, specifically acetate (a type of short-chain fatty acid), directly encourages cells to take up and use choline. This improved choline utilization then leads to several positive outcomes: it enhances the production of important fats called phospholipids, which are vital components of cell membranes; it improves the function of mitochondria, the “powerhouses” of our cells; and ultimately, it helps cells resist the aging process.
Beyond its direct effects on mammary gland aging, the study also indicated that Alloprevotella rava can make epithelial cells (cells that line surfaces of the body) more resilient to metabolic stress and even support the healthy development of the brain in offspring. This suggests that dietary interventions targeting our gut microbiota, like incorporating cinnamon polysaccharides, could offer a promising strategy for promoting healthy aging and overall well-being.
