Studying the aging process in living organisms has always been a challenge, especially when it comes to observing individual cells deep within tissues. Traditional model organisms like the turquoise killifish, which ages rapidly and shares many aging characteristics with humans, are often pigmented, making it difficult to see internal cellular changes without invasive procedures.

To overcome this hurdle, scientists have engineered a remarkable new tool: a transparent killifish. By precisely editing the genes responsible for pigmentation, they created a “clear” fish line, allowing an unobstructed view into its body. Building on this, they further modified these transparent fish to include a special fluorescent tag.
