Proliferation Dynamics Of Organotypic Vascular Endothelium During Aging
Our bodies rely on healthy blood vessels, which are lined by special cells called endothelial cells. These cells have the remarkable ability to self-renew, meaning they can divide and create new cells to keep our blood vessels in good working order, a process known as vascular homeostasis. It was commonly thought that this ability to multiply, or proliferate, generally declines with age across all tissues. However, new research reveals a more complex picture. Scientists have now created a detailed map showing how the proliferation of these vessel-lining cells changes in different organs as we get older. They found that, contrary to previous assumptions, many parts of our vascular system actually maintain their capacity for cell division even in old age. Interestingly, the study highlighted significant differences between organs; for example, the cells lining blood vessels in the lungs showed an increase in their ability to proliferate, while those in tissues like fat, the colon, and the liver experienced a reduction. This discovery emphasizes that the aging process affects our blood vessels in a highly specific way depending on the organ, providing crucial insights into how different parts of our body adapt to aging at a cellular level.
