Our brains, like the rest of our bodies, age over time. Scientists can estimate a “brain age” from imaging data, and the difference between this estimated age and a person’s actual age is called the “brain age gap.” A larger gap can indicate poorer brain health. These findings offer a new way to understand the biological links between brain aging and mental health, potentially paving the way for new strategies to promote brain health across the lifespan.
