Aging is a complex process that affects our quality of life, and scientists often use animal models to understand it better and test potential interventions. One such model involves giving D-galactose to rats, which can accelerate aging-like symptoms, primarily by causing an imbalance in the body’s natural defense system against harmful molecules, a state known as oxidative stress. Oxidative stress occurs when there are too many reactive oxygen species (often called “free radicals”) and not enough antioxidants to neutralize them, leading to cellular damage.

Recent research explored a modified version of this aging model and investigated the effects of low-dose ozone exposure. The study found that rats experiencing accelerated aging showed signs of oxidative stress, indicated by increased levels of a marker called MDA (malondialdehyde), which signifies damage to fats in cells. They also had reduced levels of important antioxidants like SOD (superoxide dismutase) and GSH (glutathione), which are crucial for maintaining a healthy balance between free radicals and antioxidants, known as redox homeostasis.

However, when these aging rats were given intermittent low doses of ozone, there were promising outcomes. The ozone treatment helped to restore the balance of these protective molecules, reducing oxidative stress. More visibly, the rats showed improved physical health, faster hair regrowth, and better-preserved skin structure, including dermal firmness and collagen thickness. These findings suggest that low-dose ozone could potentially help counteract some of the negative effects associated with aging by improving the body’s internal antioxidant defenses and supporting overall physical well-being and skin health.
