Beyond simply shedding pounds, a new class of medications originally designed to combat obesity is showing promise in areas like heart health and even how we age. These powerful drugs, known as anti-obesity medications (AOMs), primarily work by mimicking natural hormones in our body, such as glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) and glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide (GIP), which help regulate appetite and metabolism.

Research indicates that these medications do more than just help with weight loss; they can significantly reduce the risk of major heart problems, slow the progression of kidney and liver diseases, and even decrease overall mortality in certain individuals. While they don’t definitively prove a slowed aging process, early studies suggest some benefits might be independent of weight loss itself.

Newer versions of these medications are even more targeted, specifically reducing harmful fat around organs like the liver (hepatic fat) and within the abdominal cavity (visceral fat). This type of fat reduction is considered particularly important for long-term health.
