Directed Evolution Of The Drosophila Microbiome Improves Intestinal Health And Extends Lifespan
Imagine a world where we could “train” the tiny communities of microorganisms living inside us, our microbiomes, to be healthier and, in turn, make us healthier. A recent study explored this idea by focusing on the gut microbiome of fruit flies. Scientists took the gut bacteria from these flies and, outside of the fly’s body (a process called ex vivo evolution), guided them to become resistant to a harmful chemical called paraquat, which causes damage similar to aging, known as oxidative stress. When this newly evolved, stress-resistant microbiome was put back into the fruit flies, the results were remarkable. The flies became more resilient to the toxin, experienced fewer age-related problems in their gut, and lived longer lives. The researchers pinpointed a specific bacterium, Lactiplantibacillus plantarum, as a key player in these benefits. They also discovered that mutations in this bacterium led to increased production of a substance called acetate, a type of short-chain fatty acid. Interestingly, simply feeding acetate to the flies was enough to extend their lifespan, mimicking the effects of the evolved microbiome. This research offers a fascinating glimpse into how we might one day use directed evolution to create beneficial changes in our own microbiomes, potentially offering new strategies to combat aging and improve overall health.
