As women age, fertility often declines, a significant challenge in reproductive health. A key player in this process is a cellular pathway called mTOR (mechanistic target of rapamycin), which, when overly active, can accelerate the aging of ovarian cells, leading to poorer egg quality. While some drugs can block mTOR, they often come with side effects and aren’t suitable for women trying to conceive. This research explores a promising natural alternative: pentadecanoic acid, also known as C15:0, an odd-chain saturated fatty acid found in certain foods. This fatty acid appears to work by activating another important cellular pathway called AMPK (AMP-activated protein kinase) and supporting the body’s natural defenses against damage, ultimately calming down the overactive mTOR pathway. This helps cells recycle old or damaged parts through a process called autophagy and maintain a healthy metabolism. Unlike current drug options, pentadecanoic acid is naturally present in the body and is considered compatible with pregnancy, meaning it wouldn’t require a waiting period before conception. These findings suggest that pentadecanoic acid could be a safe and effective way to improve fertility in older women, paving the way for further studies and potential new treatments.
