The Applicability Of DNA Methylation-Based Tools In A Low-Income, Sub-Saharan African Population: Malawi Longitudinal Study Of Families And Health
Our bodies carry a fascinating record of our life experiences and genetic makeup in our DNA, not just in the sequence itself, but in how our genes are regulated. One key way this happens is through something called DNA methylation, a process that can turn genes “on” or “off” without changing the underlying genetic code. Scientists have developed tools that look at these methylation patterns to understand various health aspects, including predicting our “biological age” – which can differ from our chronological age and reflect our overall health and risk of age-related diseases. However, most of these tools have been developed using data primarily from people of European descent. This creates a significant gap in our understanding, as these tools might not be accurate or applicable to other populations. This research addresses this crucial issue by investigating how well these DNA methylation-based tools work in a sub-Saharan African population. By studying individuals in this underrepresented group, the research aims to determine if existing tools need to be adapted or if new ones need to be developed to accurately reflect biological aging and health in diverse populations. This work is vital for ensuring that advancements in personalized medicine and public health interventions are equitable and effective for everyone, regardless of their ancestry or socioeconomic background.
