Our skin, like the rest of our body, relies on tiny powerhouses within its cells called mitochondria to stay healthy and youthful. As we age, or due to environmental factors like sun exposure, these mitochondria can become damaged and less efficient, contributing to visible signs of aging such as wrinkles, uneven pigmentation, and slower healing. Scientists are investigating a fascinating compound called pyrroloquinoline quinone, or PQQ, for its potential to revitalize these cellular power plants.
PQQ is a naturally occurring substance found in various foods and also produced by bacteria. It acts as a powerful antioxidant, meaning it helps neutralize harmful molecules called free radicals that can damage cells and accelerate aging. Beyond just protecting existing mitochondria, PQQ also appears to encourage the creation of new ones, a process known as mitochondrial biogenesis. This dual action—protection and renewal—is what makes it particularly interesting for skin health.
Early research suggests that PQQ could help reduce oxidative stress and DNA damage in skin cells, which are key contributors to aging. It may also play a role in mitigating the effects of sun damage and cellular senescence, where cells stop dividing and can contribute to tissue aging. While these findings are promising and provide a strong scientific basis, it’s important to note that PQQ is currently considered an investigational ingredient in aesthetic dermatology. More extensive clinical studies are needed to fully establish its effectiveness and optimal use in skincare products.
