Scientists have uncovered a novel mechanism by which a natural compound, ginsenoside Rg3, derived from red ginseng, helps combat cellular aging. This compound directly interacts with a specific protein called ORAI1, which functions as a channel allowing calcium to enter our cells. By directly binding to ORAI1, ginsenoside Rg3 increases the levels of calcium inside the cell, initiating a crucial internal communication system known as calcium signaling. This influx of calcium then activates a protective cellular pathway known as AMPK-NRF2. This pathway is essential for regulating the cell’s energy and bolstering its defenses against damage, ultimately contributing to the attenuation of cellular senescence, a process where cells stop dividing and can contribute to age-related diseases.
